Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about IT support for Grand Rapids, Rockford, and West Michigan small businesses, plus websites and automation for clients anywhere.

IT support & Tech Care Plans

What counts as a user or device?

A user is a person on your team I support, and a device is a computer or server they work on. One person with one computer counts as one. If people share computers or someone uses several, we'll count it together during your consult so there are no surprises on the bill.

What happens if I go over my hours?

Support beyond your plan hours is billed at $110/hour, and I always ask before going over. You'll never get a surprise invoice.

Do I have to sign a long contract?

No. Starter, Growth, and Complete Care start with a 6-month term, then continue month to month. Choose a 12-month term and I'll waive the onboarding fee. Custom Care, for larger or more complex teams, uses a 12-month term because the setup is bigger.

Do you come on-site?

Yes, within about 45 minutes of Rockford, including Grand Rapids and Kent County. Elsewhere in West Michigan, plans include remote support plus scheduled on-site visits (travel fee applies). On-site time counts toward your plan hours.

What's the difference between cloud backup and computer backup?

Cloud backup (included in Growth and Complete) protects your Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace email, calendars, contacts, OneDrive/Google Drive, SharePoint, and Teams. It protects against accidental deletion, ransomware, and departing employees. Computer backup is an add-on that backs up an entire computer or server, including files saved only on that machine, so it can be fully restored after a hardware failure or ransomware. Most small businesses only need computer backup on a few key machines, and I'll help you pick which ones.

How is Custom Care priced?

I quote it from a simple formula based on your number of users, servers, locations, and any compliance requirements. Most 16–35 person teams land between $1,100 and $2,000 a month, still well below what larger IT firms typically charge. Custom Care uses a 12-month term.

Can you help with compliance for financial or insurance businesses?

Yes, on the technical side. I set up and document the security controls that the FTC Safeguards Rule, IRS Publication 4557 (your WISP), and Michigan's insurance data security law call for: MFA, encryption, patching, backups, access reviews, and device inventories. Examiner requests and security questionnaires beyond what your plan includes are billed as extra work. You own your compliance program, including which rules apply to you and any regulatory filings. I'm not a lawyer, auditor, or your Qualified Individual, and I don't certify that you're compliant.

What if I'm not in Michigan?

Tech Care Plans are for West Michigan businesses: on-site support within about 45 minutes of Rockford (Rockford, Grand Rapids, and Kent County), and remote support plus scheduled visits elsewhere in the region. Websites, web apps, and automation are available anywhere in the US.

Websites

Do I own my website?

Yes. You own your domain and content, and BEAM code can be transferred to you on request.

How do we work together if you're not local?

Video calls that run in your browser (nothing to install, no account needed) and shared docs. Most clients never need to meet in person.

What do you need from me?

Your logo, photos, and page text. If writing isn't your thing, I can help with the copy.

Custom or platform?

Custom (BEAM)

  • Faster load times and full design freedom
  • No platform fees or plugin limits
  • Changes go through me, or a content editor I set up

Platform (Wix, Squarespace, Shopify)

  • Easy to edit yourself any time
  • Monthly platform subscription
  • Design and features limited to what the platform allows

If you already have a platform site you like, a Theme Refresh is often enough. If you're starting fresh, I usually recommend BEAM.
